What is an OBJ File

OBJ File or .OBJ File is a geometry definition file format first developed by Wavefront Technologies for its Advanced Visualizer animation package. The file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors.

A General Description of OBJ Files

Files that contain the .obj file extension hold 3D object files created with computer drawing software. These files can contain texture maps, 3D coordinates and other 3D object data.

The OBJ file format is used by a variety of 3D graphic applications. Some of the popular applications that use the .obj file extension include Microsoft Visual Studio and CADRazor.

The .obj file suffix is also used for computer science object files. These files contain a collection of sequences that hold instructions that tell a host machine how to accomplish a certain task. These OBJ files may be accompanied by related metadata files.

.obj files are also generated by several compilers on the Windows platform, e.g. C and C++ compilers. When a source code file is processed by the compiler, an .obj file is generated. When all source code files have been compiled to .obj files, the .obj files are linked together to the resulting .exe or .dll file.

What is an IGES or IGS File ?

IGES or IGS Files stands for Initial Graphics Exchange Specification and is a file format which defines a vendor neutral data format that allows the digital exchange of information among Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems.
Many manufacturers will request an IGES or IGS file for pricing and designing molds or pricing manufactured parts for your invention or product.

A General Description of IGES

Products may be designed as either a two-dimensional, three-view drawing layout, or as a full three-dimensional model with associated drawing views and dimensions using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system. The IGES format serves as a neutral data format to transfer the design to a dissimilar system. Translators, developed to the IGES Standard, are used to export a design into an IGES file for exchange and for importing the IGES file into the destination system.

waht is IGES file format
An Example IGES File Format

An IGS or IGES file is composed of 80-character ASCII records, a record length derived from the original punched card era. It can be used by many CAD programs as a standard ASCII text-based format for saving and exporting vector data, and can store wireframe models, surface or solid object representations, circuit diagrams, and other objects. The IGS format has become the default standard file format for transferring 3D model files between the different CAD software packages. Once a user has created a model file in one specific software to send it to another user who does not have that same program without any concern whether or not the recipient will have the ability to open or view the file.

What is a STP or STEP File Format – Standard for the Exchange of Product model data.

STEP is a file extension for a 3-D graphic file used by CAD software. STP stands for STandard for the Exchange of Product model data. STP files are used to store 3D image data in an ASCII format, following the standards defined in ISO 10303-21 : Clear Text Encoding of the Exchange Structure.

what is a STEP File Example
STEP File Example

Many manufacturers will request a STP or STEP file for pricing and designing molds or pricing manufactured parts for your invention or product.

Files with the .step extension are usually 3D model files created in the STEP file format. STEP stands for Standard for the Exchange of Product Data. This ISO standard exchange format is used to distribute 3D data files (such as CAD files) in a format that can be viewed by a variety of software applications.

The .step file extension is interchangeable with the .stp file extension.

The .step file extension is also used for PyDDR files.

STP files can be opened by CATIA (Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application), a commercial CAD software suite created by Dassault Systemes and marketed by IBM.

What is CAD Design – Computer Aided Design

CAD design
CAD Designing
CAD Computer Aided Design software is used by architects, engineers, drafters, artists, and others to create precision drawings or technical illustrations. CAD software can be used to create two-dimensional (2-D) drawings or three-dimensional (3-D) models. CAD is also known as CADD, which stands for Computer-Aided Design & Drafting.
The goal of automated CAD systems is to increase efficiency, they are not necessarily the best way to allow newcomers to understand the geometrical principles of Solid Modeling. For this, scripting languages such as PLaSM (Programming Language of Solid Modeling) may be more suitable.

CAD Software will let the designer:
•Switch between two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) views.
•Zoom in and out for close-up and distant views.
•Rotate images to view them from different perspectives.
•Change the scale of images: When one value changes, related values are automatically adjusted.
•Manipulate the shape of images: Changing one portion of an image automatically changes the entire picture.

Popular CAD programs used by architects and engineers include:
•Solidworks
•Creo
•Fusion 360
•Simplify 3D
•Blender
•AutoCAD
•TurboCAD
•Vectorworks

Files used for 3D Printing

3D printers require a specific input file type. Most use STL, short for stereolithography, which is an additive fabrication technology introduced by 3d Systems in the mid-1980s. While other AF technologies have emerged, the STL file format has remained the standard for 3D printing.

STL files are representations of surface geometry in a triangulated format. While some are finding ways to add color information to specific triangles within the STL structure and creating new file types that represent these colors, true STL files do not contain any color information.
It is always a good idea to check the quality of an STL file before 3D printing it with an STL viewer at minimum. “Materialise’s Magics” software is the industry gold-standard in STL viewing and repair. There are other STL viewers available.

Many CAD applications can export geometry to the STL format. You should be cautious when relying on the ‘raw’ export. When converting CAD files to STL files inconsistencies can appear in the STL file that will cause problems in 3D printing process. All of the triangles in a STL file have a front and a back, or inside and outside. The front of the triangle is called a normal, and normals need to point the same way, outward. This is what defines an object’s inside and outside. STL files exported directly from a CAD application tend to have inconsistencies in the normal directions. If the file is put into a 3D printer with inconsistent normals, there will be voids in the printed object.

IGES or IGS Files (design file format used in the manufacturing process) stands for Initial Graphics Exchange Specification and is a file format which defines a vendor neutral data format that allows the digital exchange of information among Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems. An IGS file is composed of 80-character ASCII records, a record length derived from the original punched card era.

OBJ Files (design file format used in the manufacturing process) this file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors. For the most part it is a universally accepted format. OBJ files are typically pretty versatile.
The OBJ file format is a simple data-format that represents 3D geometry alone — namely, the position of each vertex, the UV position of each texture coordinate vertex, vertex normals, and the faces that make each polygon defined as a list of vertices, and texture vertices. Vertices are stored in a counter-clockwise order by default, making explicit declaration of face normals unnecessary. OBJ coordinates have no units, but OBJ files can contain scale information in a human readable comment line.

STEP or STP Files (design file format used in the manufacturing process) is a file extension for a 3-D graphic file used by CAD software. STP stands for STandard for the Exchange of Product model data. STP files are used to store 3D image data in an ASCII format, following the standards defined in ISO 10303-21 : Clear Text Encoding of the Exchange Structure.
