User Experience Prototype

User Experience Prototypes are a type of prototype that will allow investors and potential customers to look, feel and experience the basic idea functions of your invention or new product. A user experience prototype invites active human interaction and is primarily used to support user focused research. This type of prototype model allows early assessment of how a potential user interacts with various elements, motions, and actions of a concept which define the initial use scenario and overall user experience.

A User Experience Prototype is a prototype that may be hand-crafted or machine designed or 3D printed. Most are made of inexpensive materials and may not necessarily be representative of texture, finish, or color of the finished product. This type of prototype design is usually created for the purpose of making size, aerodynamics, potential aesthetics and ergonomic decisions about the product and most importantly observing the user experience for product improvement and adjustments.

There is a large community of prototype professionals who can help you. No, I’m not referring to those fast talking ads on TV at three in the morning imploring inventors to hand over their inventions to gain fame and fortune. Start by looking as close to home as possible. Even in this high tech world of communication it is still best to talk and show invention ideas and parts person to person. However; if local is not an option find a prototype company that will genuinely focus and listen to your needs and inform you of the requirements needed.

Form Study Prototype

Form Study Prototype is a type of prototype that will allow designers to explore the basic size, look and feel of a product without simulating the actual function or exact visual appearance of the product. They can help assess ergonomic factors and provide insight into visual aspects of the product’s final form. Form Study Prototypes do not usually represent the intended color, finish, or texture. Due to the materials used, these models are intended for internal decision making and are generally not durable enough or suitable for use for consumer testing.

Proof-of-Principle Prototype

Proof-of-Principle Prototype; a proof of concept prototype is used to test some aspect of the intended design without attempting to exactly simulate the visual appearance, choice of materials or intended manufacturing process. Such prototypes can be used to “prove” out a potential design approach such as range of motion, mechanics, sensors, architecture, etc. These types of models are often used to identify which design options will or will not work.

As an inventor or an entrepreneur you have probably come up with some great product ideas. The Proof-of-Concept Prototype allows you to validate to yourself and your investors that the idea actually works and functions as envisioned. This first prototype does not need to be pretty. Normally, it does not bear any resemblance to your final product since the goal is to only prove it functions and not to prove that it looks nice.

Proof-of-Concept Prototype
Proof-of-Concept Prototype

Another important aspect of Proof-of-Concept Prototype is it acts as an aid in obtaining intellectual property in your patent. It is extremely important that you have the ability to concisely explain your product idea to an intellectual property attorney. The Proof-of-Concept Prototype can help you explain how your product functions while also providing a functioning model that the attorney can use to seek out additional patent claims that might not have been found without the Proof-of-Concept Prototype.

Don’t underestimate the important of a Proof-of-Concept Prototype and don’t try to cut corners by skipping the Proof-of-Concept stage and moving forward without having proven to yourself and others that your idea is technically and mechanically feasible.

What is an OBJ File

OBJ File or .OBJ File is a geometry definition file format first developed by Wavefront Technologies for its Advanced Visualizer animation package. The file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors.

A General Description of OBJ Files

Files that contain the .obj file extension hold 3D object files created with computer drawing software. These files can contain texture maps, 3D coordinates and other 3D object data.

The OBJ file format is used by a variety of 3D graphic applications. Some of the popular applications that use the .obj file extension include Microsoft Visual Studio and CADRazor.

The .obj file suffix is also used for computer science object files. These files contain a collection of sequences that hold instructions that tell a host machine how to accomplish a certain task. These OBJ files may be accompanied by related metadata files.

.obj files are also generated by several compilers on the Windows platform, e.g. C and C++ compilers. When a source code file is processed by the compiler, an .obj file is generated. When all source code files have been compiled to .obj files, the .obj files are linked together to the resulting .exe or .dll file.

What is an IGES or IGS File ?

IGES or IGS Files stands for Initial Graphics Exchange Specification and is a file format which defines a vendor neutral data format that allows the digital exchange of information among Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems.
Many manufacturers will request an IGES or IGS file for pricing and designing molds or pricing manufactured parts for your invention or product.

A General Description of IGES

Products may be designed as either a two-dimensional, three-view drawing layout, or as a full three-dimensional model with associated drawing views and dimensions using a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system. The IGES format serves as a neutral data format to transfer the design to a dissimilar system. Translators, developed to the IGES Standard, are used to export a design into an IGES file for exchange and for importing the IGES file into the destination system.

waht is IGES file format
An Example IGES File Format

An IGS or IGES file is composed of 80-character ASCII records, a record length derived from the original punched card era. It can be used by many CAD programs as a standard ASCII text-based format for saving and exporting vector data, and can store wireframe models, surface or solid object representations, circuit diagrams, and other objects. The IGS format has become the default standard file format for transferring 3D model files between the different CAD software packages. Once a user has created a model file in one specific software to send it to another user who does not have that same program without any concern whether or not the recipient will have the ability to open or view the file.
