Raw Material – Plastics for 3D Printing

3D Printer Plastic Filament or raw plastic material for 3D Printing Prototyping and Manufacturing comes in six basic forms which is used in most 3D Printing Products. For special product 3D printing other raw materials exist.

Why Rapid Prototyping

Rapid Prototyping is often used to describe a fast process of turning a 3D CAD design into a real tangible part. Rapid prototyping technologies are frequently used towards the beginning of the product development life cycle to create prototypes or parts used to test and verify designs before full blown production begins. Rapid prototyping is used in nearly every industry and can be used to prototype everything from a movie prop to a space shuttle component.

What do I need to make a 3D Print Model

To build a 3D Print Model or Part you will need the following;

Stuart Martin County Prototyping

1) Drawings – Specs – CAD three dimension drawings will be needed. You will need plans of your product or part that will need to be converted into 3D Printer language.

OR

2) A Model, Part or Object will be needed. You will need an existing object that can be scanned by a 3D Scanner.

AND

3) A 3D Printer will be needed. Your particular item or part will determine what type of material will be needed and thus what type of three D printer. ALSO; quality and size of your item or part will determine which 3d printer will be needed.

3D printer models or additive manufacturing can be faster, more flexible and less expensive when producing relatively small quantities of parts. 3D printers give designers, inventors and concept development teams the ability to produce parts, concept models and prototypes using a table top size 3D Printer.

3 d printingTo perform 3d printing, the 3d printing machine reads the 3d design from a .stl file and then the 3d printer lays down successive layers of liquid (such as plastic), powder, paper or sheet material to build the model from a series of cross sections. These layers, which correspond to the virtual cross sections from the CAD model, are joined or automatically fused to create the final shape. The primary advantage of this technique is its ability to create almost any shape or geometric feature quickly.

3D Printer resolution describes layer thickness and X-Y resolution in dpi (dots per inch), or micrometers. Typical layer thickness is around 100 micrometers, although some 3D Printers such as the Objet Connex series and 3D Systems’ ProJet series can print layers as thin as 16 µm. X-Y resolution is comparable to that of laser printers. The particles (3D dots) are around 50 to 100 µm in diameter.

Printing of a 3d product design CAD model drawing with contemporary methods can take anywhere from several hours to several days, depending on the method used and the size and complexity of the model. Additive systems can typically reduce this time to a few hours, although it varies widely depending on the type of 3d printing machine used and the size and number of product models being produced simultaneously.

Traditional techniques like injection molding can be less expensive for manufacturing products in high quantities, but additive manufacturing which is now known as 3d printing can be faster, more flexible and less expensive when producing relatively small quantities of parts. 3D printers give designers and concept development teams the ability to produce parts and concept models quickly with 3d printing because costly molds are not required.

Modeling from Additive Manufacturing using Computer Aided Design (CAD)

3d CADAdditive manufacturing takes virtual blueprints from computer aided design (CAD) or animation modeling software and “slices” them into digital cross-sections for the machine to successively use as a guideline for 3D Printing. Depending on the #D Printer machine used, material or a binding material is deposited on the build bed or platform until material/binder layering is complete and the final 3D model has been “three D printed”.

A standard data interface between CAD software and the machines is the STL file format. An STL file approximates the shape of a part or assembly using triangular facets. Smaller facets produce a higher quality surface. PLY is a scanner generated input file format, and VRML (or WRL) files are often used as input for 3D printing technologies that are able to print in full color.
